OSHAcademy 10-hour General Industry Requirements

Course Outline

This 10-hour course is intended to provide entry level general industry workers information about employee/employer rights and responsibilities,  and to identify, abate,  avoid, and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training is to be tailored to the type of work involved. Training should emphasize  hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention, not OSHA standards.  The instructional time must be a minimum of 10 contact  hours.

 

The minimum  topic requirements are  as follows: Mandatory - 7 contact-hours

▪   Introduction to OSHA or Local Governmental Agencies – 1 hour

o    Covers the policies of OSHA (in the USA) or local governing bodies for Occupational Safety and Health. Each country will have unique requirements. This topic should include an introduction on workers' rights, employer responsibilities,  how penalties are assessed, how to file reports, and complaints.

▪   Walking and Working Surfaces, including fall protection  – 1 hour

▪   Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plan, Fire Prevention Plan, and Fire Protection  – 1 hour

▪   Electrical Safety – 1 hour

▪   Personal Protective Equipment – 1 hour

▪   Hazard Communication – 1 hour

▪   Personal Protective and Lifesaving Equipment – 2 hours


 

Elective - 3 contact hours.

 

The trainer must present  at least three hours of training on the following topics. Emphasis must be placed on recognition and prevention of hazards associated with each topic area. At least two topics must be presented. The minimum length of any topic is one-half hour (30 minutes).

 

▪   Hazardous Materials

▪   Materials Handling

▪   Machine Guarding

▪   Introduction to Industrial Hygiene

▪    Bloodborne Pathogens

▪   Ergonomics

▪   Safety and Health Program

▪   Fall Protection

▪   Other general industry hazards or policies

▪   Expanded discussion of the above topic


 

Required Final Exam:

 

The AT must administer a written 20-question (minimum) multiple-choice exam. The AT should hold a post-exam  discussion to review each question  and answer after all students  have completed  their exam. Students must achieve a 70% score  to pass the exam. Exam and post-exam  discussion do

not count toward required course  contact  time.


OSHAcademy 30-hour General Industry Requirements

 

The 30-hour General Industry course is intended to provide a variety of training to workers with some safety responsibility. Training should emphasize  hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.  Instructional contact  time must be a minimum of 30 hours.

 

The topic requirements are  as follows:

 

Mandatory – 15 hours

1.    Introduction to OSHA or Local Governmental Agencies – 1 hour.

    Covers the policies of OSHA (in the USA) or local governing bodies for Occupational Safety and Health. Each country will be different. should include an introduction on workers' rights, employer responsibilities,  how penalties  are assessed, how to file reports and complaints.

2.    Safety and Health Supervision, Management  and Leadership – 4 hours.

 

The trainer may include any of the following topics:

 

▪     Manager, Supervisor and Employee Safety Leadership and Commitment

Principles

▪     Injury and Illness Prevention Programs

▪      Behavior-Based Safety (BBS)

▪     Job Site Inspections

▪     Accident Prevention Programs

▪     Management  of Safety Function

▪     Employee involvement Programs

▪     Workplace Analysis and Risk Assessment

▪     Hazard Prevention and Control

▪     Accident Investigations

▪     How to Conduct Safety Training and Meetings

▪     Reporting Procedures

▪     Supervisory Communication

3.    Walking and Working Surfaces, including fall protection  – 2 hours.

4.    Emergency Action Plan, Fire Prevention Plan, Fire Protection  – 2 hours.

5.    Electrical Safety including Lockout/Tagout – 2 hours.

6.    Personal Protective Equipment – 2 hours.

7.    Fall Protection  – 2 hours.


 

Elective – 15 hours

 

The trainer must present  at least 15 hours of training on the following topics. At least 6 of the following topics must be presented. The minimum length of any topic is one-half hour (30 minutes).

 

▪    Bloodborne Pathogens

▪   Energy Control Program – Lockout/Tagout

▪   Ergonomics – techniques and program management

▪   Fleet Safety Management

▪   Hazardous Materials (Flammable and Combustible Liquids, Spray

▪   Health Hazards – Industrial Hygiene

▪   Hearing Conservation

▪   Finishing, Compressed  Gases, Dipping and Coating Operations

▪   Permit-Required Confined Spaces

▪   Powered Industrial Vehicles – Forklift Safety

▪   Machine Guarding

▪   Welding, Cutting, and Brazing

▪   Workplace Violence Prevention

▪   Other general industry safety topics as needed


 

Required Final Exam:

 

The ATP must administer a 30-question multiple-choice exam. After all students  complete  the exam, the ATP should review each question  and answer in a post-exam  discussion. A 70% score is required to pass. The exam and discussion do not count toward required course contact  time.
